British-born photographer Benjamin Arthur has lived on 4 continents, in 8 countries* and has taken Johnnie Walker's advice to "Keep Walking" to heart almost from the day he was born. This restlessness may be astrologically driven, (I'm a Sagittarian) but equally it might stem from innate curiosity and a desire to seek out and embrace difference.
After a 13 year advertising career I finally discovered, in 2008, what it was I am here to do. Make photographs to capture the beauty and curiosities of the world around me.
My work is instinctive and based on a keen sense of composition and perception. I sometimes ask myself, where do these gifts come from? The compositional sense was learned. It comes from 6 years spent studying the great masters of painting, sculpture and architecture. I always knew that Art History degree would come in useful some day. The perceptional acuity is god-given.
In my work I try to see the world rather than just to look at it. Henri Cartier-Bresson said, “Photographers deal in things which are continually vanishing and when they have vanished there is no contrivance on earth which can make them come back again.” And this, ultimately is what it’s all about… capturing that elusive, magical moment.
As a professional photographer, I bring passion, wonder and a sense of excitement to my work that is infectious.
The excitement stems from the fact that all of us who have ever held a camera in our hands are also historians. Preserving moments for the contemplation of future generations is an historical enterprise.
I truly love my work.
